Uganda cricket captain steps down

Just after Kane Williamson stepped down from his captaincy role for New Zealand in all formats, Uganda’s captain Brian Masaba has also decided to resign. Masaba, who led Uganda for five years and during the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, has stepped down after the team failed to advance past the group stages, missing out on the Super 8.

Masaba’s captaincy saw Uganda win 45 out of 60 matches from 2021 to 2024, with only 12 losses. Despite not often competing against the top-tier teams, Masaba’s leadership has been significant.

Leading Uganda to Their First T20 World Cup

Masaba, with 63 games under his belt, has taken 24 wickets and scored 439 runs, inspiring the team throughout his tenure. Rising from the Under-19 side to captain the national team, his journey is truly inspiring.

Known as the Cricket Cranes, Uganda has emerged as a leading African cricket team, much thanks to Masaba. Under his captaincy, they won five out of six games in the Africa region qualifier, securing their spot in the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite struggling in the T20 World Cup, winning only one game against PNG, Masaba’s contributions have been invaluable.

“There has been a lot of growth for me as an individual and lessons I’ve learnt about leadership and sacrifice, which will stay with me for the rest of my life,” Masaba said during his farewell speech.
