Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan at risk of contract demotion

In a surprising turn of events, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam and star wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan are reportedly at risk of losing their spots in Category A of the PCB’s central contracts. This development follows Pakistan’s poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, where they were eliminated in the group stage.

A T20 World Cup 2024 to Forget

The news comes amid heavy criticism of the national team after several disappointing results, including a shocking defeat to the United States and a missed opportunity against arch-rival India. These setbacks prevented Pakistan from reaching the Super 8 stage of the tournament for the first time in their history.

PCB Eyeing Demotion for Babar & Rizwan!

As is common after disappointing ICC tournament exits, Pakistan is gearing up for a revamp. However, the potential demotion of Babar and Rizwan from Category A has sparked significant discussions. While this demotion wouldn’t impact their overall salary, it would represent a notable drop in their status within the PCB’s ranking system for national cricketers. Sources reveal that a new central contract system is being developed, overseen by a revamped and smaller selection committee.

Pakistan Pay Grade 2024

  • Category A: 1.6 crore INR
  • Category B: 1 crore INR
  • Category C: 63 lakh INR

Annual Pay Grade

Babar Azam, currently Pakistan’s white-ball captain, seems to be on uncertain ground following the team’s lackluster performance. Babar Azam Mohammad Rizwan contracts and Shaheen Afridi are the only players currently in Pakistan’s Category A annual contract.
