Sanath Jayasuriya, the iconic former Sri Lankan cricketer and chief selector, has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Sri Lankan men’s national team. Jayasuriya, who recently served as a consultant with the team during the 2024 T20 World Cup, will step into the role previously held by Chris Silverwood until the conclusion of the England Test series in early September.
Jayasuriya’s first challenge as head coach will be guiding Sri Lanka through a white-ball series against India. Scheduled to commence on July 27, the series will feature 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is, with venues yet to be finalized.
Chris Silverwood took over as head coach in April 2022 but concluded his tenure after Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup, where they won only one match and exited in the group stage. With changes imminent, Jayasuriya, despite lacking prior coaching experience, has been entrusted with leading the team. Ashley De Silva, CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), expressed confidence in Jayasuriya’s ability, citing his extensive international cricketing background and leadership as a former chief selector.
Jayasuriya’s appointment marks a transitional phase for Sri Lankan cricket, aiming to stabilize the team’s performance until a permanent coaching solution is identified.
