One of the newest teams, but certainly not lacking in experience, the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have made tremendous strides in the last 3 years. The team reached the IPL playoffs in their first season in 2022 and finished third in 2023 with 8 wins in 14 games.
However, 2024 was forgettable for them, largely due to issues such as the publicized argument between KL Rahul and the LSG owner. This controversy raised speculation about KL Rahul possibly leaving the captaincy, and even the franchise. Amidst all this turmoil, LSG finished seventh with 7 wins and 7 losses, which was a disappointing outcome.
Despite the setbacks, there is still room for redemption. The team, having had decent performances in previous seasons, will look to get back on track. With the mega auction being the next big event in the IPL, we may see a few players retained for IPL 2025 from the LSG camp. Given that KL Rahul’s return seems almost impossible, here are three players who appear to be strong contenders for retention ahead of IPL 2025.
Nicholas Pooran
Speaking of the first name, there is no doubt that Nicholas Pooran will be a key player. The Trinidadian cricketer has had a decent outing over the years in the IPL and is considered a giant when it comes to batting. With 76 matches, over 1,700 runs, and a strike rate of 163, Pooran’s IPL record speaks for itself. His performance in IPL 2024 was particularly impressive, with 499 runs in 14 games and a strike rate of 172. Given these stats, there’s certainly a strong chance he will be retained for IPL 2025. Also, his batting position flexibility is another reason why he is likely to be brought back into the team.
Mayank Yadav
The young speedster of the Lucknow Super Giants, who has suddenly come into the spotlight due to his pace and effectiveness, made a significant impact in his debut match against the Punjab Kings by taking three wickets. He also dominated distinguished batters such as Jonny Bairstow and Shikhar Dhawan. In the following game, he claimed another three wickets against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His performance earned him two consecutive Man of the Match awards in the IPL, which is an impressive record. However, one potential concern for Mayank Yadav is his injury. After the first couple of games, Yadav was sidelined due to an injury. If he stays fit, there is no doubt among viewers that he will be retained for IPL 2025.
Marcus Stoinis
Another big name to consider is Australian giant Marcus Stoinis, who has shown tremendous power-packed performances both with the bat and ball, though mostly with the bat. His finishing skills and ability to come down the order and charge the bowlers make him a notable player. Stoinis had an amazing outing with the bat in IPL 2024. The right-handed batter played 14 innings, scored 499 runs at a strike rate of 178.21, and had two fifties along with a match-winning century against the former defending champions, CSK. This performance puts him in a strong position for retention ahead of IPL 2025. However, his bowling remains inconsistent, with only 4 wickets and an economy rate of 9, which diminishes his all-round appeal. Nonetheless, there is no doubt about his potential.
