Team India may face another challenge as star batter Shubman Gill is unlikely to play the second Test against Australia, scheduled to begin on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval. Gill, who missed the first Test in Perth due to a fractured left thumb, is reportedly still recovering and may need additional time before returning to action.

Injury Update

The injury occurred during an intra-squad match ahead of the series, leaving the 24-year-old out of the squad for the pink-ball practice game in Canberra this weekend. Medical specialists have advised Gill to rest for 10–14 days. Even after recovery, he will need extensive match practice before being deemed fit for a Test match.

A source close to the situation shared, “Gill won’t play in the practice match and is doubtful for the Adelaide Test as well. Recovery takes time, especially with thumb injuries. Even if he heals, he’ll need some quality practice.”

Impact on Team India’s Batting Lineup

Gill’s absence means adjustments are inevitable for India’s batting order. In the first Test, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal stepped up with a record double-century opening stand. With captain Rohit Sharma rejoining the squad for the second Test, he is expected to resume his role as an opener alongside Jaiswal.

This setup could push Rahul to No.3 in Gill’s absence, ruling out opportunities for Devdutt Padikkal, who was a last-minute addition for the Perth Test.

Gill’s Journey at No.3

Shubman Gill has been exceptional since transitioning to the No.3 position. With 924 runs in 25 innings, including three centuries, his average of 42.07 at this spot surpasses his overall Test career average. His adaptability and solid performances have made him a crucial part of India’s lineup.

India’s Momentum and Challenges Ahead

Despite missing key players, India secured an emphatic 295-run victory in the series opener. Now, the team aims to create history by becoming the first to defeat Australia in a day-night Test. Without Gill, the challenge becomes steeper, but the squad’s depth and recent performances provide hope.

The coming days will reveal if Gill’s recovery progresses in time or if India will continue to rely on their reshuffled order to keep the momentum alive.
