BCCI hosts Test in Delhi amid smog concerns during South Africa series

Delhi Gets a Test Match Despite Smog Worries

Yes, it’s official — BCCI hosts Test in Delhi this November against South Africa, even as concerns over air quality continue to hover.

The decision has sparked debate due to Delhi’s notorious November smog, but BCCI is standing firm. As part of India’s 2025 home season, the board confirmed that New Delhi will host the first Test of the South Africa series, beginning November 14.

This comes after India’s two-match Test series against the West Indies starting October 2 in Ahmedabad, followed by the second match in Kolkata from October 14.

Why Delhi?

Critics were quick to question why Delhi was chosen during peak pollution season. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia defended the move:

“The pollution issue doesn’t happen every year. We followed rotation policy and consulted all stakeholders.”

Delhi hasn’t hosted a Test in a while, and the Arun Jaitley Stadium, located in a relatively greener area, is expected to offer better air quality compared to other parts of the city.

A Look Back at the Smog Saga

  • 2016: Two Ranji matches were cancelled due to poor air.

  • 2017: Sri Lankan players wore face masks during a Test, battling breathing issues and eye irritation.

Despite this, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is confident. Secretary Ashok Sharma said:

“We’ll take all steps to ensure player comfort. November is better than December in terms of air quality.”

What’s at Stake?

Delhi is set to kick off India’s all-format series vs South Africa. Here’s the complete South Africa leg:

  • 1st Test: Nov 14–18, New Delhi

  • 2nd Test: Nov 22–26, Guwahati

  • 3 ODIs: Nov 30 – Dec 6

  • 5 T20Is: Dec 9 – Dec 19

While concerns over health remain, the cricket calendar rolls on — and BCCI’s call to go ahead with the Delhi Test might just become a closely watched chapter this winter.
