Former India cricket team bowler Ashish Nehra has strongly criticized head coach Gautam Gambhir’s approach in the ongoing IND vs SL ODI series. Nehra believes Gambhir got his strategy wrong by playing Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli instead of giving chances to new players. His comments followed India’s 32-run defeat to Sri Lanka in the 2nd ODI.
Nehra Not a Fan of Gambhir’s Ro-Ko Strategy
Speaking on Sony Sports after India’s loss, Nehra suggested that Gambhir should have provided opportunities to younger players rather than relying on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He acknowledged Gambhir’s desire to work with experienced players as a new coach but noted that Gambhir already knew these players well. “I know Gambhir is a new coach, and he wants to spend some time with the experienced players, but it isn’t like he doesn’t know the two of them. He is not a foreign coach who wants to get his equation right with Kohli and Rohit,” Nehra remarked.
Nehra pointed out that with India’s next series a few months away, this could have been an excellent chance to try new talent. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli reportedly ended their vacation early after their T20 World Cup win at Gambhir’s insistence. After replacing Rahul Dravid as head coach, Gambhir requested the duo to participate in the IND vs SL series, his first assignment. They returned to action, obliging Gambhir’s request.
Meanwhile, Gambhir faces his first potential series defeat as head coach. After a draw in the first ODI, Sri Lanka delivered a spectacular bowling performance in the 2nd ODI, taking a 1-0 lead in the series. The IND vs SL 3rd ODI will take place on Wednesday at 2:30 PM IST.
