The Indian Premier League (IPL) has demonstrated its continued dominance in the sports industry, with notable increases in franchise values in 2023. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lead the pack, securing the top spot with a remarkable valuation of $212 million, marking a substantial 45.2% increase from the previous year. The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) closely follow, experiencing a 52.3% surge in brand value to $195 million, attributed to the influential presence of cricket legend Virat Kohli.

Despite not making the playoffs for two consecutive seasons, the Mumbai Indians (MI), five-time champions, witnessed a 34.8% growth in brand value, reaching $190 million and maintaining their position among the top-tier teams. Additional highlights include the Rajasthan Royals, boasting the most significant percentage change in value year-over-year at 103.4%, and the debutant Gujarat Titans entering with an impressive initial brand valuation of $120 million.

In 2023, the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises witnessed substantial growth in brand values, reflecting the league’s overall surge. The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) led the chart with a notable 45.2% increase to $212 million, followed closely by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at $195 million, up by 52.3%. The Mumbai Indians (MI) maintained their top-tier status with a 34.8% growth to $190 million.

The media rights mega deal with Viacom18 and Disney Star significantly contributed to the surge in the IPL’s overall brand value, outperforming major global sports leagues. Digital platforms’ increasing role in sports consumption, particularly driven by Viacom18’s focus on digital viewership, played a crucial role.

Several IPL teams showed promising growth, with the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) securing a value of $181 million and the Rajasthan Royals (RR) experiencing an exceptional 103.4% increase to $120 million. Newcomers, Gujarat Titans (GT) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), entered with substantial brand valuations of $120 million and $83 million, respectively.

The report highlighted the trend of big teams like CSK, RCB, and MI drawing the largest viewership, with the CSK vs. GT final match reaching 32.0 million concurrent viewers on Jio Cinema. The IPL’s revenue-sharing model ensures each franchise benefits equally, creating a valuable asset regardless of disparities in brand values. As brand values continue to rise, the IPL landscape is expected to become more competitive and dynamic in the future.
