IPL Over-Rate Breach Punishments Hit Shreyas Iyer Hard

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cracked down on Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians after their captains, Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya, were found guilty of slow over-rate breaches during Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The IPL over-rate breach has become a costly issue for both leaders. This penalty was due to slow over-rates maintained by both teams, and the BCCI’s strict response came down hard on the captains.

IPL Over-Rate Breach: Heavy Fines for Shreyas Iyer and Team

Punjab Kings faced this punishment for the second time this IPL season. Shreyas Iyer, as captain, was fined a hefty INR 24 lakh. This fine stands out because the team’s slow over-rate was a repeated offense, triggering the maximum penalty. The rest of the Punjab Kings squad wasn’t spared either, with individual fines set at INR 6 lakh or 25% of their match fees, whichever was less. The IPL over-rate breach clearly hurt PBKS’s pockets this time.

Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians Fined Most in IPL 2025

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians’ captain Hardik Pandya faced an even bigger fine—INR 30 lakh—for his team’s third slow over-rate offense of the season. This is the highest fine any captain has paid in IPL 2025 so far. The rest of the Mumbai Indians’ players, including the Impact Player, were fined either INR 12 lakh or 50% of their match fees, whichever was less. The IPL over-rate breach issue is not just a minor hiccup but a serious offense attracting steep penalties.

What Happened in Qualifier 2?

Despite the fines, Punjab Kings triumphed over Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2, chasing a tough target of 204 with five wickets in hand and six balls to spare. Shreyas Iyer’s men are now set to face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2025 final at the same stadium on June 3. Cricket Army fans will surely keep a close eye on how these captains manage their pace next time to avoid IPL over-rate breach penalties.

BCCI’s firm stance against slow over-rates sends a clear message: time management is key in IPL cricket. For more detailed cricket updates and insights, check out Cricket Army at cricketarmy.com.
