In a significant development, a Sri Lankan court has directed two Indian nationals to surrender their passports amidst allegations of match fixing in the Legends Cricket League (LCL). Yoni Patel and P Akash, currently out on bail, face charges related to match manipulation during a game between Rajasthan Kings and New York Super Strikers in March.
The accusations surfaced in relation to matches scheduled on 8th and 19th March at the Pallekele Stadium. Notably, Yoni Patel is associated with the Kandy Swamp Army, a participating team in the league, adding intrigue to the unfolding investigation.
Following the allegations, the magistrate court barred the duo from leaving Sri Lanka. Subsequently, the court has now mandated the surrender of their passports as authorities delve deeper into the case.
The intervention came after complaints lodged by Upul Tharanga, the chairman of the national selectors, and Neil Broom, prompting the Special Investigation Unit to initiate a thorough probe.
It’s noteworthy that Sri Lanka has stringent criminal laws against match fixing, with severe penalties including hefty fines and up to 10 years of imprisonment for those found guilty. Notably, the Legends Cricket League lacks official recognition from the ICC or the Sri Lanka Cricket Board, adding complexity to the legal proceedings.
As investigations unfold, the cricketing community awaits further developments in this concerning episode of alleged match fixing.
