In a surprising twist, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Matthew Mott has stepped down as the white-ball coach with immediate effect. Mott’s departure wasn’t unexpected, especially after England’s lackluster performance in recent tournaments.
Mott’s journey with the team saw a mix of highs and lows. The 2019 ODI World Cup champions had a rough run in the 2023 tournament in India, finishing seventh and managing only three wins against Bangladesh, the Netherlands, and Pakistan. While their performance improved in the T20 World Cup 2024, they fell short against a formidable Indian team in the semi-finals. Despite these setbacks, Mott’s tenure had its highlights, including a remarkable victory in the T20 World Cup 2022, where England triumphed over India and Pakistan in the semi-final and final.
Rob Key, England’s Managing Director, praised Mott’s contributions, saying, “Matthew has been instrumental in our recent successes, and we are grateful for his efforts. His achievements, including being one of only three coaches to lead England to a Men’s World Cup victory, are commendable. However, with three World Cup cycles in quick succession, it’s time for a new direction. As we focus on upcoming challenges like the Champions Trophy, we believe this change is necessary for future success.”
Stepping in on an interim basis is former English opener Marcus Trescothick. Key expressed confidence in Trescothick’s abilities, noting his respect within the team and his strong rapport with white-ball captain Jos Buttler. “Marcus and Jos have a solid partnership that will help ensure continuity and stability as we move forward,” said Key.
