Rahul Dravid could join three IPL teams as head coach in 2025

The role of coaching the Indian cricket team is undeniably one of the most prestigious yet challenging positions globally. Rahul Dravid, who took over the reins from Ravi Shastri in November 2021, has steered the team to remarkable feats, including reaching the World Cup final in 2023 and the ICC Test Championship final. However, with Dravid’s tenure set to conclude after the upcoming T20 World Cup, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will initiate the search for his successor by inviting fresh applications.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah recently confirmed this transition and indicated the possibility of considering both Indian and foreign candidates for the role. While the specifics remain uncertain until the official recruitment process begins, several potential contenders have emerged for the coveted position.

VVS Laxman: As the head of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), VVS Laxman has demonstrated leadership during Dravid’s absences, notably securing victories in various series and clinching a gold medal at the Asian Games in 2023. His familiarity with the team dynamics and coaching prowess position him as a strong contender.

Ashish Nehra: Despite not fitting the conventional coaching archetype, Nehra’s success with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL showcases his adeptness in mentoring players. With a commendable track record and an intimate understanding of the game, Nehra’s candidature cannot be overlooked.

Ricky Ponting: A renowned figure in cricket, Ponting boasts extensive experience as both player and coach. His coaching stints with IPL franchises and the Australian national team, coupled with his leadership at Delhi Capitals, underscore his credentials for the role. While Ponting previously declined the offer, circumstances may prompt reconsideration this time.

Rahul Dravid: Despite the conclusion of his current tenure, Dravid remains eligible to reapply for the position. However, after serving for a substantial period, it remains uncertain whether he will seek to continue his coaching journey with Team India.

The impending decision holds significance for Indian cricket’s future trajectory. As the CAC evaluates potential candidates, the selection will ultimately prioritize leadership qualities, cricketing acumen, and compatibility with the team’s ethos.
