Ravichandran Ashwin Fined in TNPL for Dissent and Misuse of Equipment

Ravichandran Ashwin, the Dindigul Dragons’ captain and former Indian all-rounder, faced fines during a recent Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2025 match. The incident occurred on June 8 in Coimbatore, when Ashwin showed visible frustration after being given out LBW. He was fined 30% of his match fee for his actions during the game, with 10% allocated for dissent against the umpires and 20% for misusing his cricket equipment.

What Happened to Ashwin During the Match?

The drama unfolded in the fifth over of Dindigul Dragons’ innings when Ashwin was dismissed for 18 runs off 11 balls. He had just hit two fours and a six when he was given out LBW to R Sai Kishore while attempting a sweep shot. The replays suggested that the ball might have pitched outside the leg stump, but Ashwin had already used both of his reviews earlier in the game, leaving him unable to challenge the umpire’s decision.

Ashwin’s frustration was evident as he confronted the on-field umpire, Kritika, and pointed toward the pitch. As he walked off the field, his irritation escalated. He angrily struck his pads with his bat and later threw his gloves in the dugout, all of which contributed to the fines imposed on him.

Fines Imposed on Ashwin for Dissent and Equipment Misuse

According to a TNPL official, Ashwin was fined a total of 30% of his match fee. A portion of that fine, 10%, was for showing dissent against the umpires, while the remaining 20% was due to his misuse of cricket equipment. After the incident, a hearing was held by the match referee, where Ashwin accepted the sanctions.

While Ashwin’s performance with the bat was impressive, his untimely dismissal had a significant impact on Dindigul Dragons. The team collapsed shortly after, losing all wickets for just 93 runs in 16.2 overs. Tiruppur easily chased down the target, winning by nine wickets with 49 balls to spare. Tushar Raheja’s match-winning 65 and Esakkimuthu’s superb 4/26 were crucial for Tiruppur.

Fans React to Ashwin’s Frustration

The incident quickly gained attention on social media, with cricket fans voicing their opinions on Ashwin’s reaction. Many questioned whether the frustration was warranted, given the decision could have been overturned with a review. Despite the loss, Ashwin and the Dindigul Dragons continue their TNPL campaign, sitting in fifth place on the points table with one win from two matches.
