During the third ODI between Sri Lanka and India, Rohit’s playful nature and quick thinking shone through. As Sri Lanka chose to bat first, their opening pair, Pathum Nissanka and Avishka Fernando, formed an impressive 89-run partnership, posing a significant challenge for India.
The game’s turning point came in the 20th over when Axar Patel, the left-arm spinner, was introduced into the attack. As Patel worked hard to break the partnership, Rohit decided to help in an unexpected way. Standing at first slip, Rohit was heard encouraging Patel in fluent Sinhalese.
“Anna hari, mēka hari,” Rohit repeated, meaning “that’s right, that’s right” in English. Even Rishabh Pant was surprised by this, asking the skipper, “Kya hai yeh? (What is this?).” It turns out that Rohit had picked up some Sinhalese from the locals at the start of the 3-match ODI tour. Using it mid-match? That’s next-level creativity!
