Rohit Sharma hitting a six in an ODI match

Indian captain Rohit Sharma has added another feather to his cap by equalling the legendary Chris Gayle’s record of 331 sixes in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). This remarkable achievement came during the third and final ODI against Sri Lanka on August 7 in Colombo.

Rohit Sharma’s Six-Hitting Milestone

Despite India’s 110-run defeat in the match, which allowed Sri Lanka to secure their first bilateral series victory over India since 1997, Rohit’s performance was a highlight. With just one towering six in his quickfire 35 off 20 balls, Sharma matched Gayle’s record, further solidifying his reputation as one of the game’s most prolific six-hitters.

Since his debut, Rohit has smashed 331 sixes in ODIs, placing him alongside the West Indian powerhouse in the record books. Gayle, who retired in 2021, had held the record for the second-most sixes in ODIs, a title now shared with Rohit.

Chasing Afridi’s Record

Rohit’s ability to effortlessly clear the boundary has been a hallmark of his career, making him a formidable force in ODIs. With just 20 more sixes needed to surpass former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi’s record of 351 sixes, Rohit is on the brink of becoming the greatest six-hitter in ODI history.

In addition to this milestone, Rohit also became the fourth Indian batter to score more than 2,000 ODI runs against Sri Lanka, joining the ranks of legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni.

Match Recap: Sri Lanka Clinches Series

The match itself saw Sri Lanka winning the toss and opting to bat first. Contributions from Avishka Fernando (96), Kusal Mendis (59), and Pathum Nissanka (45) helped the hosts post a competitive total of 248/7. Debutant Riyan Parag stood out for India with the ball, taking 3 wickets for 54 runs.

However, despite a strong start by Rohit, the Indian batting lineup faltered, leading to a disappointing loss and a 2-1 series defeat.

Will Rohit Make History?

With just a few more sixes needed to claim the top spot, the cricketing world eagerly watches as Rohit Sharma closes in on Shahid Afridi’s record. Will he become the greatest six-hitter in ODI history? Share your thoughts!
