Former Pakistani off-spinner Saeed Ajmal has showered praise on Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah, highlighting his sharp cricketing mind. Ajmal believes that Bumrah’s intelligence, combined with his speed, sets him apart from other bowlers. Speaking at the launch of the GloFans High School Cricket Cup, scheduled in Sharjah and Ajman this November, Ajmal made his admiration clear.
“Jasprit Bumrah is a very intelligent bowler, and intelligence is crucial when paired with speed,” Ajmal remarked, giving credit where it’s due.
But that wasn’t all. Ajmal also emphasized the importance of India and Pakistan resuming their bilateral cricketing ties. He pointed out that India hasn’t toured Pakistan for a bilateral series since 2006, with the Indian team’s last visit being for the 2008 Asia Cup. The neighbors now only face each other in ICC tournaments.
“Even if an India-Pakistan match takes place on the moon, it would be monumental,” quipped Ajmal. He strongly believes that the love between these two nations could fuel incredible matches, regardless of the venue.
The last bilateral series saw Pakistan touring India for a white-ball series in 2012-2013, and since then, Pakistan has participated in ICC events in India, most recently in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. Ajmal hopes to see the two teams visit each other’s countries once again.
In addition to promoting bilateral matches, Ajmal voiced his support for Test cricket: “There is a need to promote long-format cricket. The ones who excel in Tests can play any other format,” said Ajmal, who boasts 178 Test wickets from 35 matches.
