India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami is officially out of the India vs Australia Test series. After a long hiatus from cricket, Shami returned to competitive matches, playing one Ranji Trophy game and nine Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches. However, his left knee injury flared up, sidelining him from the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT).
Hopes of Shami’s participation in Melbourne and Sydney Tests were dashed as swelling in his left knee worsened. Team India captain Rohit Sharma admitted uncertainty about Shami’s condition and directed queries to the National Cricket Academy (NCA). The NCA later confirmed that increased joint loading from bowling aggravated the pacer’s condition.
Shami’s troubles started after a strenuous Ranji Trophy game where he bowled 43 overs, followed by the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Despite his efforts to prepare for red-ball cricket, the increased workload led to swelling in his knee.
The BCCI’s medical team is now focused on rehabilitating Shami. His availability for the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the ICC Champions Trophy remains doubtful. The board stated, “Shami requires more time for controlled bowling loads and strength building to meet Test cricket demands.”
India will keenly miss Shami’s expertise, but the hope is to see him fully recovered soon. Stay tuned for updates on Shami’s progress and his potential return to the pitch!
