Earlier this month, the ICC issued a notice to USA Cricket for breaching two key norms. One of these was the absence of a CEO, a requirement that has now been addressed with Atkieson’s appointment. The other issue involves meeting governance standards set by the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).
Importance of NGB Status for LA 2028
For any sport to be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, its governing body must achieve National Governing Body (NGB) status. The International Olympic Committee approved the inclusion of cricket in the LA Games during its 141st Session and Executive Board meeting in Mumbai last year. This makes it crucial for USA Cricket to fulfill all necessary criteria to maintain its standing.
Atkieson’s Vision for USA Cricket
Jonathan Atkieson, who was previously the Chief Operating Officer of USA Rugby, brings over 15 years of experience in national governing bodies to his new role.
“I’m honored to join the team at USA Cricket. It’s an incredible time for the sport here in the United States with the historic performance of the men’s national team in the recent T20 World Cup, the completion of the second season of Major League Cricket, and the first opportunity to showcase cricket in the Olympics here on home soil during the LA28 games,” Atkieson said.
“Our goal is to build a world-class organization to capitalize on that momentum and firmly establish cricket’s position in the American sporting landscape,” he added.
Atkieson is credited with leading USA Rugby through a financial restructuring in 2020, followed by a period of rapid growth and development over four years. His leadership is expected to bring similar success to USA Cricket.
