Daniel Vettori Skips Perth Test for IPL Auction
Australia’s assistant coach and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) head coach, Daniel Vettori, has opted out of the 1st Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Perth to attend the IPL 2025 mega auction. The auction, set to take place on November 24-25 in Jeddah, clashes with the Test match scheduled from November 22-26.
Vettori, who joined Australia’s support staff in 2022, officially informed Cricket Australia (CA) of his decision. A CA spokesperson stated, “We are supportive of Dan’s role as SRH’s Head Coach. He will finalize preparations for the 1st Test before heading to the IPL auction and will return for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.”
Balancing Dual Coaching Roles
Vettori’s dual role as Australian assistant coach and franchise cricket mentor is part of a unique deal with CA. It allows the former New Zealand captain to pursue opportunities in leagues like the IPL and The Hundred while fulfilling national coaching duties.
During the Australian summer of 2023, Vettori managed both roles seamlessly when the IPL auction was held in December. However, the advanced scheduling of this year’s auction creates a direct conflict, leaving CA to look for temporary replacements.
Lachlan Stevens Steps In
Queensland coach Lachlan Stevens, known for his work with Australia A and the Under-19 side, will step into Vettori’s shoes for the Perth Test. Meanwhile, CA is actively seeking a full-time national pace bowling coach to bridge gaps when Vettori is unavailable.
Why IPL Auction Matters
The IPL auction holds immense significance for franchises like SRH, where Vettori serves as head coach. With high stakes and strategic planning required, Vettori’s presence in Jeddah underscores the importance of the event for his team’s future.
Will Vettori’s decision to prioritize the IPL auction impact Australia’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy? Only time will tell as fans gear up for an exciting clash between India and Australia starting November 22!
