Abhishek Nayar joins India’s coaching team for Sri Lanka series

It looks like Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach of the Indian cricket team, has had his first choices for support staff approved by the BCCI. Abhishek Nayar has been named as an assistant coach for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka, as per Cricbuzz. Both Nayar and Ryan were part of Gambhir’s KKR squad in the IPL.

Joining Gambhir in India’s coaching staff, Nayar will be accompanied by Ryan and the retained fielding coach T Dilip. Additionally, Morne Morkel is a strong candidate for the role of bowling coach. This fulfills Gambhir’s vision for his support staff as he takes over from Rahul Dravid.

The report mentions that Dilip and Nayar will travel with the team to Colombo on Monday, while Ryan is expected to join after the conclusion of the MLC. Furthermore, the BCCI has reportedly discussed with Morkel the possibility of becoming India’s net bowling coach.

Gambhir specifically requested Abhishek Nayar following their successful stint with KKR in IPL 2024. Nayar has been a vital part of the KKR setup for quite some time, earning high praise from many KKR youngsters and impressing Gambhir with his work ethic.
