Suryakumar Yadav’s promotion to India’s T20I captain has been a hot topic lately. Despite expectations for Hardik Pandya to step up, Ajit Agarkar has explained the rationale behind the decision: they need a player who can stay fit and available consistently.
During the ICC T20 World Cup, Hardik Pandya was the vice-captain to Rohit Sharma. With Rohit retiring from T20Is, many assumed Hardik would naturally take over. However, for the IND vs SL series, it was Suryakumar Yadav (SKY) who was appointed captain, with young Shubman Gill as vice-captain.
Deserving SKY Gets Captaincy
“SKY is the deserving candidate. He is one of our best players,” Agarkar said during a press conference. “Hardik is still crucial for us, but fitness is a significant concern. We need someone who can be available all the time, and that’s been an issue for Hardik.”
Agarkar emphasized that India requires a captain who can consistently be on the field, something that Hardik’s injury history makes uncertain. As a result, Suryakumar Yadav was selected to lead Team India in the T20 format.
